A formal application to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), a citizenship exam, and occasionally a citizenship interview are required to apply for Canadian citizenship.

A completed application must be submitted to the relevant IRCC office for evaluation. After the application has been confirmed, the applicant will be notified that a citizenship exam is required.

The Citizenship Exam

Applicants between the ages of 18 and 54 must pass a citizenship exam that assesses their knowledge of Canadian history, geography, the political process, and the rights and duties of Canadian citizenship. IRCC supplies all candidates for Canadian citizenship with the study guide A Look at Canada. Twenty questions comprise the exam. Passing grade is 15 out of 20. Normal exam completion time is thirty minutes.

On the day of the examination, candidates must bring all original papers, including immigration paperwork, passport, picture identity, and any other documents pertinent to their permanent residency in Canada. Some candidates are also required by the requirements to appear before a citizenship judge for an interview. Interviews typically last between 15 and 30 minutes.

No one under the age of 18 is needed to take the exam.

Language Competence

Applicants between the ages of 18 and 54 must additionally demonstrate English or French fluency. To demonstrate linguistic competency, candidates must provide one of the following:

Results from an approved third-party test; or Transcripts or a diploma from an English or French secondary or post-secondary institution; or Proof of obtaining Canadian Level Benchmark (CLB) 4 or above in some government language programs.

Constitutional Ceremony

Successful candidates must then attend a ceremony when they obtain a certificate of Canadian citizenship and become formal citizens of the country.

Citizenship ineligibility in Canada

It is essential to study the documentation handed to you when you become a permanent resident to ensure that all Terms and Conditions have been satisfied. If you have not complied with any of these Terms and Conditions, you may not be eligible for Canadian citizenship.

Furthermore, you may not be eligible for Canadian citizenship if:

have a criminal record or are facing criminal charges in Canada or abroad; have been ordered to leave Canada; have been denied Canadian citizenship due to misrepresentation, or have had your citizenship revoked.
